About How and Why I Write

This piece is meant for all of my audiences, but particularly professionals, friends, and family. Its purpose is to show my progression as a writer and to showcase the lessons I have gained from this class. It was pretty difficult to narrow the topic of this essay down to one or several reasons why I write. I have so many! I tried getting there by first writing an anecdote to start the essay off. After the first draft, my thesis was “I write to show that I can articulate my ideas.” While this was one valid reason why I write, I had trouble connecting this idea to evidence of my development in the Writing 220 course.

To tie in my experiences in the class to the essay more easily, I discarded my thesis, picked out the main points of my re-purposing and re-mediation reflections, and derived a thesis from them. What arose was a thesis similar but deeper than the first: “I write to find my voice.” This thesis was even better because I was able to analogize the topic of my projects to myself as a writer. To complete the draft, I divided the piece into chronological sections, turned one anecdote into two, and gave the piece a more fitting title.
